We recently had a movie night with 2 other people. (Conan The Barbarian 2011 with Parthena and Eli; we all gave it 3/5 stars, 6/10, which is low but acceptable.) Four people is really crowded on the orange couch (from my grandparents), so we decided to switch the the leather couches (from my ex-co-worker), so there'd be room for 4 people.

Turns out we've left things this way. Leather works as a really good mousepad, so I don't have to use a mousepad except for QuakeLive. The high back makes me feel more isolated from the world behind me, but it's probably slightly harder to hear the rear speakers. It works well for parties like this, though.

But anyway... Anybody who's come over here a lot would be a bit surprised to see this.

And yea, we're just about to watch Todd Solondz's Welcome To The Dollhouse. We both rated it 4/5 stars on Netflix, and Clint rated it 8/10 on IMDB, as did Carolyn, who considered it a high 8 (8.4). It was a solid, typically awkward Todd Solondz film. This is from his early era of movies that I like (Fear Anxiety And Depression, Happiness) much much MUCH better than his later era of movies (Storytelling, Palindromes) (I rated Palindromes 5/10, putting it on the bottom 10th percentile for movies that I watch). It's rare for us to watch dramas -- of the last 72 movies we've watched, only 3 have been dramas. But we also like the "genre" of "fucked up", and this movie is quite fucked up. Quite fucked up indeed. A great reminder of how shitty people can be. Poor Dawn. "At 3 o'clock today, I'm gonna RAPE you!" "I don't mean to be a cunt." "'Why do you hate me?' 'Because you're ugly.'" The native rating for Welcome To The Dollhouse is: Netflix: 3.4/5 (which was also netflix's guess for us), IMDB: 7.4/10. So we liked it more than average, which is true for 95% of movies we watch.

Animal Rights Protesters at Staples

Animal Rights Protesters at Staples

This evening there was a very loud group of animal rights protesters in front of DCUSA, on 14th Street NW in Columbia Heights, DC. They were standing outside Staples, and were yelling anti-Staples slogans, but it's unclear to me what the office supply store has done to warrant being singled out. I'm an animal lover and support animal rights, but I wonder if a fur coat store, or institution that experiments on animals might have been a better choice?
That's the Tivoli Theater in the background.

BATANG at the Washington National Zoo (Smithsonian)

Batang is a Bornean orangutan. She was born in December 1996 and came to the National Zoo from Topeka Zoo, on loan from Brookfield Zoo.

She weighs about 110 pounds and has white circles around her eyes. She is bold and curious, often studying the operating mechanisms of the doors and walls of her enclosures.

Batang and Kyle came to the Zoo in November 2004 as part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan for orangutans. If all goes well, Batang may become pregnant in the next two or three years.

Whale Rescue Burleigh Heads
Out taking some morning photo’s, when I notice a baby whale caught in the Shark nets off Burleigh Heads. I rang the police who get the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries who are in charge of the net to start the rescue. The men and woman from the Fisheries and Sea World did a fantastic job in freeing the entangled baby whale. They where two very large whales (the mother and escort???) swimming around the baby and staying very close while the rescue was performed. (by a very experience whale rescue team) ....."The sooner we know that we have an entanglement, the better chance we have of a successful release," he said.

www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/10/13/147631_gold-coast...
Queensland Shark Control Program Manager Tony Ham said public assistance was needed with reporting suspected entanglements.
"Anyone who sees a whale or other marine life entangled in shark control equipment can call the 24-hour hotline on 1800 806 891.

"With a significant increase in the whale population - approximately 12,000 now migrating each season - entanglements are anticipated at this time of year as the population makes its journey back to southern waters," Mr Ham said.

Including today's entanglement, since 2000 28 whales have been caught in shark control equipment in Queensland.

Of these entanglements, 25 whales have been successfully released...Congratulation to all.........

The Vienna Zoo at Schönbrunn is the oldest existing zoo in the world and was voted Europe's best zoo in 2009. Each year more than two million visitors come to see the panda baby, newborn elephants and many other rare animals.

Today the Zoo at Schönbrunn is considered one of the best and most modern zoos in the world. The animal compounds have a particularly generous and natural design. More than 500 animal species - from Siberian tigers and hippos to one-horned rhinoceroses - live here.

Stone Ear of Animal Sculpture

Check out these types of animals images:

Stone Ear of Animal Sculpture

Achaemenid period (ca. 550 - 330 BCE).

The artists in ancient Persia employed a brilliantly practical solution to the challenge of sculpting animals with upright ears.

Why do I call such work challenging? Well, for one thing, it requires a larger block of stone (larger because allowances have to be made for the eventual ears) and the removal of more stone about the figure's head than if the animal's ears were flush with the body.

Second, there's little room for error. Screw up badly enough in carving an ear (e.g., make it too small, situate it in the wrong place, or fail to capture the right look) , and you may find yourself having to start the entire sculpture over again.

Third, assuming you're fortunate enough to sculpt a perfect ear on the head of the animal you're carving, you've just created a relatively long, wide and thin protuberance that's just begging to be broken off or damaged in your studio if someone's careless.

Enter the Mr. Potato Head school of art, wherein appendages are carved separately from the animal's body and fitted with pegs that plug into corresponding holes placed exactly where the sculptor wants the appendages to be. Think of the savings of time and material, to say nothing of the improved accuracy of the finished product.

I wonder, though, what the sculptor used to hold the ears in place? Was it a permanent bond, or was the glue of a type that would allow a damaged ear to be removed and replaced?

In the museum at Persepolis, Iran.
