Watching the Wildlife Go By
Although it was kind of cold this day, it was so great to see the gibbons so active. The two young ones (you can partially see the black one at the top... one of these in the total view is the other) were a trip to watch. They were acting just like normal human siblings. You could clearly tell the black one (and probably the youngest) was getting on its siblings' nerves.

These are kind of birds one often see in (often small) cages, so it's much better and nicer to see them in the wild. Especially under this nice yellow sunlight!

Animals Disgust Me.

I often choose not to urinate if a moth is in the bathroom, so I'm unsure whyyyy I chose to hold this snake. It was going for my penis.

Pacific Wildlife Rescues Great Horned Owl
Image by flythebirdpath~}~}~}
I watched a dramatic rescue yesterday by Pacific Wildlife Care volunteers responding to a call about a GHO caught on a barbed wire fence. Center Operations Chair, Dani, wrapped a towel around the owl's body and held it as Dale cut the barbed wire on each side of its wings to free it. The owl was taken to a local vet and euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.
Owls flying into barbed wire fences while hunting is a common occurrence. If not rescued, they die a slow, tortuous death. Even though this owl didn't make it, efforts of Pacific Wildlife Care ended its prolonged suffering. I'm glad to be a volunteer with this group that cares for wildlife. There are so many ways to help and I've already found several where I fit in.
"Pacific Wildlife Care's mission is to rehabilitate and return to their natural habitat, orphaned or injured wildlife, and to educate our community to value and respect wildlife and the environment we share with them."
Pacific Wildlife Care is licensed by CA Dept of Fish & Game and US Fish & Wildlife Service.
If you find a sick or injured animal call PWC at 805-543-WILD (9453).

Wildlife overpass on Highway 1 near Yoho Park
Thanks for your patience on the night of December 16, 2010 while we shut down Highway 1 to erect this wildlife overpass.”
This photo looks west at one of two new wildlife overpasses on Highway 1 near Yoho Park. This overpass is the westernmost of the two and is located close to the 10 Mile Hill Brake Check. Its girders are 37 metres long.
Wildlife is the number one primary contributing factor to collisions in B.C., so overpasses like these not only protect animals, they save human lives too.

I don't normally do wildlife photography as I don't have the patience for it, but this little creature was obviously asking to have her photo taken so I didn't really have much choice.

A Moment in Eden, Where the Animals Are Curious and Unafraid
An incredibly beautiful walk this afternoon: On our way to Pluto (another story), we walked a few miles on the Military Ridge Trail west of Riley's. With the slanting, late afternoon light and the incredible greens all around us, it was like strolling through Eden. Bicyclists rolled by by quietly, and we passed the occasional pedestrian or runner. This doe seemed as entranced by the scene as we were. She stood quietly in the tall grass along the trail, watching the passing parade, unafraid, showing no inclination to run from the people passing by. We gazed at each other across the species divide -- two living creatures silently acknowledging each other. I raised my camera and squeezed off a frame.

Spoonbill in the marsh

First animal picture: we saw these birds (on of them is a roseate spoonbill) on the side of the Transpantaneira. Sadly it was already quite dark but the picture came out not too bad. The Nikon D4 is a good camera!
