California's native plants display in Capitol park Sacramento

Capitol Park's collection of native plants represent the natural flora that thrived in California before Europeans arrived and began to change the landscape.
California supports a tremendous range of ecosystems, from desert to high mountains, foggy coasts to warm inland valleys, and includes the highest and lowest elevations in the continental United States. This diversity has produced a large number of native species in California, plants and animals that grow only here and nowhere else.
California's native plants once formed the backbone of our natural communities. However the biodiversity of these natural communities was reduced after the arrival of Spanish, Mexican, and Gold Rush-era settlers. They introduced new species that aggressively competed with and eliminated some of California's native plants and animals. By the early 1900s, a conservation movement, epitomized by President Theodore Roosevelt, began addressing the need for a more sustainable and balanced usage of the state's and nation's natural resources. Native species and their extinction over a relatively short period of time became a topic of discussion within California as indigenous animals such as the grizzly bear and elk began to disappear.
Capitol Park's Native Plants section is a product of America's early conservationist movement. Governor Hiram Johnson enlisted the help of the states' schoolchildren in 1914 to create a section of Capitol Park that would represent some of California's diverse natural environment. He appealed to youngsters living in each of the state's 58 counties to identify and donate common trees and shrubs from their geographic region for Capitol Park. Today this area of the park preserves several native species that were once common in California's natural world, but are scarce today.

The Motif
Strawberries in the garden and a hopper declared this one his own. He hasn't left the plant for three days now. This is a true macro shot - so going to large will reveal even more detail. Best viewed on Black
Technical
Taken with a Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT) and the EF-S 60mm Macro lens. I used my EZ 430 flash but I still have to try to get it work better. This shot turned out pretty nice with it, but there are shots that have problems with the light, especially receiving to less of it. I tinkered some kind of a soft-box yesterday, and I will try to tinker an even better one, but still I'm thinking of buying a macro flash. As it is I'm glad I have the setup as it is at hand, as it allows to stopp down to f/11 in almost all situations. But I'm still trying to get it down to f/22.

The Baltimore World Trade Center, at 401 East Pratt Street, was built in 1977 by Henry Cobb and Pershing Wong of I.M. Pei & Partners. At 32 floors and 405-feet, it is the world's tallest even-sided pentagonal building (the five-sided JPMorgan Chase Tower in Houston, Texas is taller, but has unequal sides). Perched at the Harbor's edge, the building appears to rise out of the water, suggesting the prow of a ship. The 27th-flor has an observation deck, called "Top of the World," that offers panaromic views of Baltimore during daytime hours.
The Pratt Street Power Plant (far left), also known as the Pier Four Power Plant, at 601 East Pratt Street, was built in Neo-Classical style by the architectural firm of Baldwin & Pennington between 1900 and 1909. From 2001-2003, the 132-foot by 326-foot complex, consisting of three brick with terra cotta trim structures, was converted to the mixed-use project, Power Plant Live!
The National Aquarium in Baltimore (far right), at 501 East Pratt Street on Pier 3 of the Inner Harbor, is the most visited attraction in Maryland, with an an annual attendance of 1.6 million to see its collection of approximately 16,500 specimens and more than 660 species of animals.

ENVIRON
Before the coming of the animals, the plants raced to claim the best soil in the savanna. The quick grasses grew first. But, in time, they were pushed aside by the thick roots of the bushes. Yet, the bushes could not hold back the trees. And, so it went, until only the trees remained. The clouds overhead, angered by the greed of the trees, struck them with bolts of lightning causing great fires and clearing the land so the grasses and bushes could return. And, to this day, whenever the trees grow too bold, the lightning returns to make things on the savanna even again.
