A meerkat at Pessac Zoo.
Meerkats are small burrowing animals, living in large underground networks with multiple entrances which they leave only during the day. They are very social, living in colonies averaging 20–30 members. Animals in the same group regularly groom each other to strengthen social bonds. The alpha pair often scent-mark subordinates of the group to express their authority, and this is usually followed by the subordinates grooming the alphas and licking their faces. This behavior is also usually practiced when group members are reunited after a short period apart. Most meerkats in a group are all siblings or offspring of the alpha pair.
Meerkats demonstrate altruistic behavior within their colonies; one or more meerkats stand sentry while others are foraging or playing, to warn them of approaching dangers. When a predator is spotted, the meerkat performing as sentry gives a warning bark, and other members of the gang will run and hide in one of the many bolt holes they have spread across their territory. The sentry meerkat is the first to reappear from the burrow and search for predators, constantly barking to keep the others underground. If there is no threat, the sentry meerkat stops signaling and the others feel safe to emerge.

The Kangaroo Family
Kangaroos, and their close relatives, vary greatly in size, ranging in weight from 500 grams to 90 kilograms. There are at least 69 different types (called species) of kangaroo. These species are found naturally in the wild only in Australia and New Guinea, although feral populations of some species have been introduced in New Zealand, Great Britain and Hawaii.

Recently, scientists have separated these species into two families (the Macropodidae and the Potoroidae) which together form a super-family known as the Macropodoidea (or macropods). The family Macropodidae includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and the forest wallabies of New Guinea. The family Potoroidae is made up of potoroos, rat-kangaroos and bettongs which are only found in Australia.

The best-known macropods are kangaroos, which is why the word 'kangaroo' is often used to describe any of the members of this family. We use 'kangaroos' in this text whenever these animals are being discussed in general.

Getting Around
Kangaroos of all sizes have one thing in common - powerful back legs with long feet. They are distinguished from other animals by the way they hop on these strong back legs. Only a few other small mammals, such as hopping mice, do this.

Hopping uses slightly less energy than four-footed running, but this advantage is lost at low speed. To move slowly, kangaroos balance on their front paws and tail, and then swing their hind legs forward in a pendulum motion.

One of the many odd things about kangaroos is that, on land, they can only move their hind feet together but when swimming they can kick each leg independently. Tree-kangaroos can move each hind leg separately when climbing. It is also interesting to note that, while several species of kangaroos have tails that can wrap around and carry nesting material such as grass and small branches, not one of the tree-kangaroos has the ability to grasp branches with its tail.

It’s not often you see a pack of Jaguars travelling together. Solitary, independent and swift, these animals prefer to hunt alone, journeying
through the open spaces with a self-assuredness that is unmistakable.
But, today is different. 17 F-TYPES are waiting, with an unflinching combination of cunning patience and
fierce desire, an instinct they are each created with. Or perhaps, an instinct inherited from their daring ancestors?
Once unleashed, these F-TYPES will follow their intuition to sprint along the wide open road and head east.
Their target: The legendary Mille Miglia race in Italy.

Humboldt Penguins grooming in a prominent position at Chester Zoo.

Scientific name: Spheniscus humboldti

Size: 4.9 kg (m), 4.5 kg (f)
Nest type: barrow or cave
Favourite food: small fish

Endemic to the cold nutrient-rich waters of the Peru Current, the Humboldt Penguin breeds in a hot Mediterranean to desert climate.

Identification:
Similar to Magellanic Penguins, but lacks the second dark breast band and has a wider white band around the head. Humboldt Penguins also have more extensive areas of bare skin than Magellanic Penguins, including a pink fleshy patch at the base of the lower mandible. Immature birds are very similar to those of Magellanic Penguins but are generally darker on the head.

Habits:
Humboldt Penguins nest in burrows - often dug into thick guano deposits, among boulders, in sea caves and sometimes in the open. Most birds depart the colony after sunrise and forage in close proximity to the colony. Foraging distances vary with location but Humboldt Penguins are typically inshore foragers.

Distribution: map
Endemic to the Humboldt Current, breeding range extending from 5° S in Peru to 37°S in Chile, with isolated colonies existing as far as 42°S near Puerto Montt.

Diet:
Small schooling fish like anchovies and sardines are the staple diet of Humboldt Penguins, supplemented with the odd squid.

75MM Field Gun Type 90
types of animals
Image by An excruciating evening with Roger Mathison.
The display reads:

75MM Field Gun Type 90
Japan WW II

The most modern of the Japanese Field Artillery of WW II was the 75mm Field Gun Type 90, which was loosely based on the Schneider et Cie., (the French Schneider and Co.), Canon de 85, Mle 1927, (85mm Gun, Model of 1927). The type 90 was equipped with wooden wheels for animal draft, and solid rubber tires for mechanical draft. This is the only Japanese field gun equipped with a muzzle brake, and formed the basis for the Type 3 tank gun in the Ho-ni I (Gun Tank Type I).

It is doubtful that any of these weapons served after WW II.

Caliber: 75mm (2.95 in)
Range: 14,964 meters (16,350 yards [9.3 miles])
Elevation: -142 mils to 764 mils (-8 degrees to 43 degrees)
Traverse: 888 mils (50 degrees)
Weight (in action): 1400 kg (3085 lbs)
Shell Weight: 6.025 kg (13.27 lbs)
Rate of fire: 10 - 12 rounds per minute

Museum Acc. # 86.63.1
