“A face that only a mother could love”. That’s how some people might describe a newly hatched brown pelican nestling. Brown Pelican chicks are altricial when they hatch, which means that they have no feathers and can’t really move around very well yet. They can’t regulate their temperatures or feed themselves, so they are totally dependent on their parents for awhile. In fact, pelican nestlings don’t even fledge until they are about three months old! That means a lot of time and effort for the adult pelicans to feed and care for their young. When they first hatch, they don’t look anything like the adults, but in a few short months, they will be the same size as their parents and have all of their feathers!
