I figured many of you were a bit tired of nothing but bird and underwater pictures, so yesterday, I went out and photographed some bugs. These green tree ants are very common in the tropical north of Australia (as well as in southeast Asia), especially here in Cairns. As you can guess, they build their nests in trees. When their nest is approached, they can be aggressive, even to members of their own species, and they swarm in huge numbers. Obviously, this is quite a bad mix. In this photo, the ants are participating in trophallaxis. Trophallaxis is a technique used by many ant species to transfer fluids and food to each other via their mouths. Basically, when an ant full of food meets a hungry ant from its colony, the full ant vomits into the hungry ant's mouth. Sharing is caring, right?
