The Golden Retriever is a breed of dog, historically developed as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl and upland game during hunting. As such they were bred to have a soft mouth to retrieve game undamaged and an instinctive love of water. Their intelligence and versatility sees them employed in a variety of roles including illegal drug detection, search and rescue, as hunting dogs and as guide dogs. They possess a friendly, eager-to-please demeanor, and are one of the most popular family dog breeds (by registration) in the world.
The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident". They are not "one man dogs" and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them. Their trusting, gentle disposition therefore makes them a poor guard dog. Any form of unprovoked aggression or hostility towards either people, dogs or other animals, whether in the show ring or community, is completely unacceptable in a Golden Retriever and is not in keeping with the character of the breed and as such is considered a serious fault. Nor should a Golden Retriever be unduly timid or nervous. The typical Golden Retriever is calm, naturally intelligent and biddable, with an exceptional eagerness to please.
Golden Retrievers are also noted for their intelligence. The Golden Retriever ranks fourth in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, being one of the brightest dogs ranked by obedience command trainability. These dogs are also renowned for their patience with children.

El Golden Retriever es una raza de perro. Es muy popular, sobre todo en Estados Unidos y Europa. Se piensa que se desarrolló en el Reino Unido y más concretamente en Escocia alrededor del año 1850, pero las mezclas producidas para obtener esta raza aún no se conocen. Con sus características de perros cobradores como sabuesos, bloodhound y spaniel de agua, es un hábil perro de caza con habilidades para rastreo.
Amigable y confiable, carece de agresividad y es una raza que tiende a ser destructiva con objetos del hogar si está mucho tiempo solo. No tiene agresividad hacia las personas ni hacia sus congéneres, su mirada tierna y melancólica manifiesta su necesidad de afecto. Incapaz de una reacción adversa, responderá a todo contacto con alegría, ya que para él el cariño es vital; por ello preferirá estar en un apartamento pequeño con la familia que en una casa con jardín pero sin compañía humana. Ésta es una de las pocas razas que aceptan a los desconocidos con cariño, y es muy probable que un golden tome a un huésped como un amigo aunque tal vez desconfíe de los extraños. Es un perro perfecto para los niños, es tan cariñoso que no se vuelve agresivo ni si le estiran de la cola o les meten las manos en la boca. En raras ocasiones, un golden también puede ser agresivo. Especialmente cuando siente que la vida de su amo o la de él mismo peligra. Es decir, es una raza casi ideal.
