Active service stable
service animal
Image by National Library of Scotland
A rather primitive form of outdoor stable with a soldier grooming a horse. With no stable roof to protect the horses from adverse weather, it is likely that the horses were not in a good physical state, as illustrated by the rather emaciated conditions of the horses to the right of the picture.

Though horses were deployed in cavalry attacks at the start of the war, the quick shift to mechanised warfare on the Western Front meant that they would later be used for carrying supplies rather than as an offensive strategy. In short, horses were no match for machine guns, landmines and belts of barbed wire.
