Cottonmouths are venomous pitvipers that reside in the southeastern United States. They are known for their nasty disposition, and when approached, they open their mouths, revealing the white/pink interior (hence, the name "cottonmouth"). Additionally, they shake their tails, although they lack the rattles of their close relatives, rattlesnakes. If that wasn't bad enough, they are very fond of water, and they inhabit swamps, rivers, lakes, creeks, and ponds. You might want to think about that the next time you go swimming in the South. However, despite these traits, the cottonmouth's bad reputation is greatly undeserved. When I photographed this one last March, I was standing a mere five feet away, but it did little more than gape at me. Even so, it hardly did that. While you should not approach these snakes (I used a long lens for this shot), they are not as bloodthirsty as folklore claims. we had a batch of pictures that were double-exposed so the picture of the ducks is overlapping the pictures at the petting zoo
