BATANG at the Washington National Zoo (Smithsonian)

Batang is a Bornean orangutan. She was born in December 1996 and came to the National Zoo from Topeka Zoo, on loan from Brookfield Zoo.

She weighs about 110 pounds and has white circles around her eyes. She is bold and curious, often studying the operating mechanisms of the doors and walls of her enclosures.

Batang and Kyle came to the Zoo in November 2004 as part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan for orangutans. If all goes well, Batang may become pregnant in the next two or three years.

Sea Otter

Sea otters are about twice the size of river otters. Both are from the weasel family. However, River otters range from about 6 to 31 pounds, where Sea otters lowest range starts at 30 pounds and they can get as heavy as 100 pounds.

Otters do not contain any blubber, so they rely on their thick fur to keep them warm in the cold oceans.

Captain Crunch

"Captain Crunch was captured from the wild by Tony Hunter, a nuisance alligator trapper for the state of Florida. He was taken from Lake Seminole near Tallahassee, Florida when it was determined by the state he was a danger to humans and their pets. He had actually learned to leave the lake at night and stalk sleeping dogs in the yards of their owners. Alligators are great at adapting to their surroundings!
When captured, Captain Crunch was officially measured at 13'2" long and weighed 782 pounds. Captain Crunch was also tested by Florida State University professor, Dr. Greg Erikson, who was working through National Geographic, for the amount of force of his bite. Out of hundreds of alligators tested, Captain Crunch set the official world record for bite force by an American Alligator at 2,982 pounds. That record still stands today and likely will never be broken."

In James Turnock's write-up, he says, "On the way to the airplanes that evening, we came across a colony of Weddell seals. Some were swimming and others were sunning themselves on the ice shelf. They are not unfriendly and have no fear of men we were able to walk freely among them. I petted one of them and he rolled on his back like a big puppy all five hundred pounds of him."

They also ran into (in a different locale) two petrified seals that were found to be 2,000 years old. That was probably creepy.

BTW -- I should advise the reader that seals are not necessarily friendly. A woman in a city once tried to push a seal off a rock, mistakenly thinking it was stranded (and not sunning itself). It bit off her nose.

Assuming you have Microsoft Office, you can read more about the Antarctica expedition at: www.tgaw.com/Turnock/Antartica.doc

The White-nosed Coati also known as the Pizote or Antoon, is a member of the Procyonidae (raccoon family). It has a long shovel-shaped snout that extends beyond its lower jaw, and a 20-to-25-inch (51-64 cm) long erect tail with six or seven light bands on it. It has crushing molars and large canine teeth. White-nosed Coatis inhabit wooded areas (dry forests, rain forests, cloud forests) of the Americas. They are found at any altitude from sea level to 3500 meters (11,500 feet), and from as far north as southeastern Arizona and New Mexico to as far south as Panama. White-nosed Coatis are generally dark brown, reddish, or yellow. Their eyes are masked while their muzzles, chins, and throats are light gray. Their bodies range around 110 to 120 centimeters (43 to 47 inches) long, of which 50 to 65 centimeters (20-26 inches) is tail. They normally weigh between five and nine kilograms (11-20 pounds). The Coati's tail is not prehensile.

I have been deployed to Iraq, and my wife is having a hard time handling our 14 dogs. If you know of a good home:
bcade@mindspring.com

678-232-9985

We're in North Georgia.

Sweetie is a golden retriever, possibly collie mix, around 5 years old and 65 lbs. She is housebroken, spayed, happy, and loving, and she needs to lose a few pounds. She will require a home with extra love though. Sweetie has macular degeneration, and we have been told she will eventually go blind. We have had her over 3 years which is longer than we were told she would be able to see, and she can still see. It is obvious she cannot see well, as she will bump into things once in a while (I took this picture today, and you can tell she is looking right at me). We took Sweetie in because we like to help the dogs with special needs. She was the first “going blind” dog that we took in. After her, we took one in that was totally blind (that poor girl found a good, loving home!), and that is when I realized that a dog with impaired sight ideally should not be in a large group of dogs. Sweetie gets insecure when all of the other dogs are around her and they bump into her. She does fine with a couple of dogs, but 14 running around her are too much for her to handle. For that reason, we often keep Sweetie alone, and that is not a good situation for her either. When going to a strange environment, Sweetie will need time to adjust to the floors, yard, etc. If she is about to step on an unfamiliar surface, you have to be patient with her until she learns it is safe. Sweetie would not do well with younger dogs or puppies jumping on her. Once she adjusts, she is fine. I did learn with the one completely bind dog that we had that blind dogs do just fine. They smell and listen to their world carefully, and enjoy it! Sweetie has an adorable way of cocking her head when she is listening. Sweetie would do best with older children and no cats.

Luke is an energetic 5-year-old male Coonhound mix who weighs 58 pounds! He came to Lollypop Farm because his owners were moving and couldn’t take him along. This super friendly guy has been patiently waiting for a new home since May.

Luke seems a little crazy in his kennel, but once outside he’s a calm fellow who does great on a leash. When let off leash in the play area, he sniffs things out, but comes back frequently for a little loving. Luke loves a good ear rub!

He has spent most of his life outdoors so will need help adapting to the life of an indoor dog. Older kids are recommended, and he would do best in a house with no cats. Luke is waiting to meet you!

Melba would do best in a home without kids under 12, and she should meet any dogs in the household before being adopted. She would love to go home with her buddy Finley, who is also at Lollypop Farm.

Melba is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take her home free of charge!

Nikki is a 3-year-old Bulldog/Pit Bull mix who weighs 46 pounds. She was rescued by our Law Enforcement officers in October because she was not being treated properly.

Nikki had a rough start in life, so she is a little unsure of new situations and takes her time getting to know new people. She enjoys her space, so a home with children over the age of 12 is recommended. This sweet girl needs a patient adopted who will take the time to help her regain her confidence.

If you are interested in meeting Nikki bring out the whole family to meet her, including any dogs in the household to make sure they’ll be buddies! Please consider giving this deserving girl a warm home to call her own!

Happy Tails: Winzig

On December 23, we lost our amazing cat, Louie. My husband, being such the sweet person that he is, decided that if I wanted a new companion, he would do just that: get me a new little buddy to help me pass the time and cope with losing "my child."

When we adopted "Fabio" we decided that Fabio wasn't fitting, but rather Winzig ("tiny" in German). We decided on Winzig cause he was just over two pounds when we got him and everything about him was just tiny and so cute. He has been the sweetest, most adorable hyperactive little cat I have EVER seen! He's into EVERYTHING -- if it's not attached to the floor, he's playing with it, no matter the size.

After having him in our house for 5 minutes, he was already showing us his belly and running rampant through our place getting into things he shouldn't be into. It was like he had been there for months. He made himself very comfortable very quickly.

But not only is he the perfect kitten for our family, he's been the best help with keeping our minds occupied and not feeling down in the dumps over losing our old cat Louie. I will soon have Louie's paw print tattooed with his ashes on my arm -- that's how important he was to me. But Winzig is so important to both myself and my husband now. He's the most unique cat I have EVER been in contact with.

Not only is he unique, but he's strange as well. He loves to sleep on his back sprawled across the couch or snuggled up to me -- he's become my little shadow and buddy. Winzig likes to run full speed into things such as the wall, chair legs, and the bathtub. (He fell in once when I was in there!) He loves to attack your feet and legs when you walk past him, and he thinks it's fun when he's sleeping to sneak up on you and smack you in the face -- no claws though, only the little pads smacking your forehead.

So don't let the cute face fool you; he's a little monster. My little monster.

Happy Tails: Cleo

Hello,

I wanted to share the Happy Tail of Cleo's adoption with you. I adopted Cleo in June 2012 during a very dark period of my life. I had just moved back to Rochester and, in the chaos of the move, my not-quite-2-year-old Tortie, Sable, (also a Lollypop kitty) had escaped through an open window. "Heartbroken" cannot begin to describe my despair. I fell in a deep depression, spending every waking moment searching my new apartment complex for my missing Sable. Finally, my family convinced me that I needed to move on.

I looked at four kittens before the incredibly patient shelter volunteer brought in Cleo. She was tiny, just over two pounds, and the moment she spied the teaser I dangled on the adoption screening room floor, she catapulted her tiny body towards me, attacking the feathers with teeny teeth. She had the most unique fur I had ever felt on a cat--downy and so fluffy, like a baby chick or a bunny. Best of all, I thought, she was Sable's physical antithesis: white to Sable's black, and with enough baby energy to keep me fully engaged.

Not two weeks after I got Cleo home (once my petrifying fear that I would accidentally squash her by rolling over in my sleep finally wore off), I received a phone call. A woman had seen my "missing cat" posters. She had found Sable. She was down a third of her weight, desperately ill with a respiratory disease that necessitated a month of antibiotics, and had been missing 33 days--but she was alive.

I was so worried about having two cats--let alone one as tiny and rambunctious as Cleo. But these two are made for each other. They curl around each other like a YinYang symbol, grooming each other's heads and tails as extensions of their own. They chase each other through my tiny apartment and stampede together onto my bed, eagerly chirping for food each morning (For some reason, neither of them meow, but they both make a variety of chirps and "mrr" noises!) They happily share a litterbox and food station, and an entire basket of toys they both love to fetch! Once in awhile, Sable has to smack her little sister (who is now, at 9 months, just as big as her) down and remind her who's in charge, but they love each other. I am so grateful to Lollypop for my two furbabies!

This is the largest cat in the world. Its native habitat is Eastern Siberia, but is also found in Northern Korea and China.
These beautiful creatures grow to between 9’ (2.7m) and 12’ (3.6m) long. They can weigh between 28 and 46 stones (200 - 300 kilos). Tigers are carnivores; in the wild, tigers need to eat at least 20 pounds of meat a day, and can eat up to 200 pounds, (that’s about the size of a fully grown man)!

Red pandas, which resemble raccoons, are about 42 inches long, including a long, bushy tail. They weigh between seven and 14 pounds. Their red-and-white markings blend in with the red mosses and white lichens that grow on the trees in which they live. Their soft, dense fur covers their entire body—even the soles of their feet. Red pandas use their long, bushy tails to balance when they're in trees. They also cover themselves with their tails in winter.

Shoebill Stork

Only a few zoos in the world have shoebills, so the Houston Zoo's addition of this young pair of big African birds is a significant achievement for our bird department. Named after their prominent shoe-shaped bills, shoebills are a vulnerable bird species whose feathers turn completely gray as they mature. Their large heads, eyes, and bills help them find food in muddy swamps. Shoebills can grow as tall as five feet, boast a nearly eight-foot wingspan, and weigh up to fifteen pounds. Despite their large size, relatively little is known about their habits in the wild. While some taxonomists consider them to be in the stork family, many others believe the birds are more closely related to pelicans.
